Temple in the Mist

Pura Luhur Batukaru, on the slopes of Gunu (Mt.) Batukaru, is one of Bali's holiest temples. Shrouded in mist and seemingly to emerge from the lush rainforest, the mossy shrines inspired an awe and silence, punctuated only by the sounds of water, birds and frogs. We were the only ones in this incredibly spiritual place. We sensed it's sacredness. The magic and mystery was palpable as we moved in saroung and sash among the shrines and meru, imagining ceremonies we could not understand, many dedicated to the growing of crops and the spirit of the mountain, Maha Dewa. We cleansed our hands and faces as Made did in the holy water spouting from the mouths of lesser spirits. All the temples and homes in west Bali are aligned in relationship to this temple.
